The American International School of Abuja (AISA) has contacted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), urging the agency to provide “authentic banking details” for the refund of fees paid for the children of the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

Allegations suggest that Bello made an advance payment of $720,000 in school fees for five of his children, who are currently in grade levels 2 to 8 at the school, utilizing funds from the Kogi State Government.

Following an attempted arrest of Bello by EFCC operatives on April 17 at his residence in Abuja over an alleged N80.2 billion fraud, the current Governor of Kogi, Usman Ododo, reportedly intervened and escorted Bello away.

In a letter addressed to the Lagos zonal commander of the EFCC, AISA stated that a total of $845,852 had been paid in tuition since September 7, 2021, and requested an official written request with EFCC’s banking details for the refund of $760,910 after deducting educational services already rendered.

AISA emphasized that no further fees are anticipated, and any additional deposits by the Bello family would be brought to the attention of the anti-graft agency.

The school also clarified that Ali Bello, on behalf of the family, contacted them on August 13, 2021, to arrange advance payment of school fees until the students graduate from High School.

Bello has been declared wanted by the EFCC, with the Nigeria Immigration Service placing him on a watchlist.
