Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has stated that the Federal Government is currently spending more on fuel subsidy than it did in the past.

He made this disclosure while speaking at a capacity-building workshop in Maiduguri.

El-Rufai acknowledged the reintroduction of fuel subsidy by the government, stating that while he supports the withdrawal of oil subsidy, the current situation has necessitated its return.

He emphasized the importance of pragmatism in leadership, highlighting the need to modify policies when they do not yield the expected results.

In addition to discussing fuel subsidy, El-Rufai also commented on the critics of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, urging them not to rush to judgment.

He emphasized that it is too early to assess the performance of the current administration, which has been in office for just nine months.

El-Rufai stressed that leadership is a continuous process, and it is unfair to judge a leader’s performance based on such a short period.

He called on Nigerians to pray for their leaders and trust in God’s guidance.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu had earlier announced the removal of fuel subsidy, citing the unsustainable nature of the subsidy and the need to redirect the funds to critical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, education, housing, and national security.

Tinubu emphasized that the funds previously spent on subsidy were benefiting a select group at the expense of national development.
