Billionaire banker and Chairman of United Bank for Africa, Tony Elumelu, has expressed interest in the idea of acquiring a local club in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Elumelu shared his thoughts on Monday via his social media handle.
This response came after a user on the platform suggested that prominent businessmen and corporations should consider purchasing NPFL clubs to enhance competition within the league.
The user proposed scenarios where notable entities like Dangote Group, BUA Group, Elumelu, and Geregu Group could acquire various NPFL clubs.

In his reply, Elumelu confirmed that the Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh, had approached him regarding the possibility of acquiring NPFL clubs as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Elumelu expressed interest in the proposal and indicated that discussions were underway to evaluate the feasibility of such acquisitions.
The NPFL serves as the top tier of club football in Nigeria.
However, like many other leagues, it has faced challenges such as financial instability and declining fortunes over the years.
The potential involvement of prominent figures like Elumelu could inject renewed interest and resources into the league, potentially revitalizing Nigerian football at the club level.
