The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, announced on Tuesday that 48 members of various cult groups in the Sagamu area of the state have renounced their membership and surrendered their firearms to the police.

The repentant cultists submitted one pump action gun, four double barrels, seven single barrels, two English pistols, four locally made pistols, and 35 cartridges to the police during a ceremony at the Akarigbo Palace.

Alamutu emphasized that the initiative to offer amnesty to the cultists aims to give them a second chance to become law-abiding citizens and contribute to peaceful coexistence in the state.

He stated that the amnesty directive aligns with the Inspector General of Police’s order to mop up illicit firearms in the country.

The Akarigbo and Paramount ruler of Remo land, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, explained that the amnesty was the result of engagements and discussions with the cultists, during which many expressed regret for their actions and pledged to reform.

Oba Ajayi stressed that cultism leads to ruin and urged the repentant cultists to stay away from such activities.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun, security agencies, and the Sagamu Security Committee for facilitating the success of the amnesty program.

The monarch also called on the residents of Sagamu to show support and acceptance to the repentant cultists, urging them not to be treated as outcasts but to be integrated back into society.
