The Olubadan Advisory Council is set to convene on Tuesday to initiate the process of installing a new monarch for the Ibadan land.

Following the demise of Oba Lekan Balogun on March 14, 2024, at the age of 81, after a two-year reign over the ancient city, the revered throne has remained vacant.

The meeting of the Olubadan Advisory Council, a customary protocol, will be hosted at the residence of the most Senior High Chief, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, former Oyo State governor, located in Bodija.

As per tradition, the council will nominate the successor to the late monarch, High Chief Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, during the meeting.

According to sources, this nomination usually occurs after the eighth-day Islamic prayers for the departed ruler, which took place on Friday, March 22, 2024.

Upon nomination, a formal document affirming Olakulehin’s selection will be forwarded to Governor Seyi Makinde, through the Office of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The Olubadan stool historically rotates between two lines—the Otun Line (Civil Line) and the Balogun Line (Military Line)—for the appointment of occupants.

It’s noted that the immediate-past Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, who passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, after his two-year tenure, was from the Otun Line.
