Tragedy struck Nasarawa State University, Keffi, as two female students lost their lives in a stampede at the university’s convocation square on Friday.

The incident occurred during the distribution of palliatives to students by the Nasarawa State government.

According to sources within the university, the stampede resulted in the tragic deaths of the two female students due to suffocation caused by the overcrowding.

Several other students sustained injuries of varying degrees.

Confirming the incident, the National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association, Yunusa Baduku, revealed that many students involved in the stampede had been rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

He expressed sorrow over the unfortunate turn of events, highlighting the chaos that erupted as students overwhelmed security measures to access the venue.

Baduku further disclosed that one student had succumbed to injuries, while the extent of injuries among others was yet to be fully determined.

He praised the swift response of the university management, student leaders, and state government representatives in providing assistance and medical care to the affected students.

The distribution of palliatives was part of the state government’s efforts to alleviate the economic hardships faced by students.

Similar distributions had recently taken place at other educational institutions in the state, including Federal University of Lafia, Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, and the College of Education, Akwanga.
