On Thursday, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed via his official handle, the arrest of two suspects involved in extorting traders and residents who used a pedestrian bridge in Yaba.
The arrests were prompted by a widely circulated video depicting the suspects demanding a N100 fee from pedestrians carrying luggage.
The identities of the suspects were not disclosed. However, Wahab confirmed that their immediate arrest was ordered in response to the viral video, emphasizing that they will face legal charges.

Wahab stated, “In response to the viral video of some miscreants extorting traders and other Lagosians on a pedestrian bridge in Yaba, I instructed the Corps Marshal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps @LAGESCOfficial to immediately arrest the persons and the officer involved. They will be arraigned immediately in court while the clampdown on those on the run would continue.”
Additionally, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps apprehended 63 individuals on Tuesday for crossing the highway and engaging in unauthorized street trading.
In February, the state government had issued a warning of arrests and prosecution for individuals who cross major highways instead of utilizing designated pedestrian bridges.
