Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has clarified the decision to rename the Abubakar Imam International Airport after President Bola Tinubu.
He emphasized the importance of aligning names with appropriate symbols, citing the renaming of the State Polytechnic Zungeru after the late literary figure, Abubakar Imam, as a more fitting tribute.
Governor Bago further explained that President Tinubu approved the decision.
The renaming of the airport, which was initially named after Imam in June the previous year, was announced as Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport following its commissioning on Monday.

This decision was communicated by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, quoting Governor Bago during a live interview on TVC News.
To address the concerns of Niger citizens, the Governor opted to name the State Polytechnic Zungeru after Abubakar Imam, highlighting the significant contributions of the renowned Hausa author to the state and northern Nigeria.
This move, according to Ibrahim, aims to appropriately honor the literary icon.
Regarding the decision to rename the airport after Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Bago expressed appreciation for the President’s support in establishing the first special Airport Agro-Processing Free Zone in Nigeria and acknowledged Tinubu’s contributions to nation-building.
He emphasized the significant role of President Tinubu and the support received from his government.
Governor Bago assured that the renaming decision was made after thorough consultations with relevant stakeholders, including members of the State Executive Council, and after obtaining the President’s approval.
