The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has officially approved standards for the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the country, marking a significant step towards promoting safer, more reliable, and environmentally sustainable energy solutions.
SON announced the approval of 80 standards for CNG use in road vehicles and related appliances as part of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative.
These standards cover various aspects of CNG utilization, including production, storage, transportation, and appliance compatibility, as stated in a release by SON’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Funsho Bolaji.
The move comes in the wake of the removal of fuel subsidies on May 29, 2023, prompting many Nigerians to convert their vehicles and generators to CNG for cost-saving benefits.

CNG is gaining prominence as an alternative fuel due to its cleaner emissions and cost-effectiveness, but ensuring its safe and effective utilization requires adherence to rigorous standards.
The SON emphasized its commitment to excellence and innovation, noting that the development and approval of these standards mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector.
The Presidential CNG Initiative, aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to promote alternative fuel adoption, emphasizing energy diversification and sustainability.
Collaborating with key regulatory agencies, including the National Mid-Stream Down-stream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, National Automotive Design and Development Council, and Ministry of Finance Incorporation, SON ensured Nigeria’s readiness for CNG adoption.
The approved standards are expected to lead to safer CNG use, reduced environmental impact, and cost savings.
Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso, Director-General and Chief Executive of SON, highlighted the importance of effective implementation and urged stakeholders to embrace CNG as a viable and eco-friendly energy option.
The release of these standards underscores Nigeria’s commitment to quality, safety, and progress in the energy sector, taking a significant stride toward a greener and more resilient future.
