The Ogun State Government has taken proactive measures to ensure the success of the Free Surgical Intervention Programme for indigent people in the state.
Under the leadership of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, the program has commenced with surgical operations conducted at State Hospitals in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, and Ilaro.
The program, which kicked off with beneficiary registration, encompasses major and minor surgical procedures as part of the governor’s medical palliative initiative for the people.
Dr. Rotimi Ogungbe, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, after witnessing the first surgery performed on a patient under the free surgery programme at the State Hospital, Ilaro, expressed his satisfaction with the program, highlighting the comprehensive services it offers, including preoperative, operative, and post-operative care.

He commended the state government for fully mobilizing medical personnel, equipment, and resources to ensure its success.
Dr. Bashirudeen Oni, the Coordinator of the program in the Yewa Zone, outlined the wide range of surgical operations to be carried out, addressing various medical conditions such as breast lumps, hernias, fibroids, cataracts, among others.
The program aims to initially assist approximately eight patients and scale up as it progresses.
The Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Yusuf Abdulwahab, acknowledged the large turnout of beneficiaries and disclosed that those cleared for surgery were already undergoing operations.
Beneficiaries, such as Mrs. Saidat Dopemu and Miss Ogunsiji Waidat, expressed their gratitude to Governor Abiodun for the opportunity, emphasizing the relief it brings from financial burdens associated with surgery.
Additionally, Mr. Adisa Oladejo thanked the governor for the initiative, highlighting its significance during challenging times.
He urged others facing similar medical challenges but lacking the means to take advantage of the program.
At the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta, Dr. Kayode Oladeinde, the Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon, praised the governor for the relief brought to the people, especially amidst difficult circumstances.
Beneficiaries, Taiwo Ojeje and Timothy Sowale, expressed their appreciation for the program, pledging to contribute to the state’s development.
Dr. Tayo Lawal, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, highlighted that registered beneficiaries would receive an Ogun State Health Insurance Agency (OGSHIA) card, fully funded by Governor Abiodun.
This initiative aims to enhance access to healthcare services beyond the surgical intervention program.
Beneficiaries, including Mrs. Adebanjo Adebukola, Mr. Fadipe Solomon, and Master Adekoya Emmanuel, lauded Governor Abiodun for the program, encouraging other citizens and residents to participate in this beneficial initiative.
