The Federal Government has extended the suspension of commercial flights between Niger Republic and Nigeria, following a resolution by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
This resolution, initiated in response to the political events in Niger Republic on July 26, 2023, which saw the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum in a coup led by General Abdourrahamane Tchiani, continues to impact air travel between the two countries.
The directive, communicated through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) Aeronautical Information Services on February 2, 2024, and signed by Director of Air Traffic Services Tayo John on behalf of the agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, outlines the restrictions.

According to the directive, all commercial flights from Niger to Nigeria, from Nigeria to Niger, or overflying Nigeria en route to Niger are suspended in accordance with ECOWAS resolutions.
However, certain exemptions are noted: overflight aircraft passing through Niger airspace, aircraft in emergencies, and special flights.
The directive further specifies that special flights must obtain authorization from the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace.
This measure aims to ensure compliance with ECOWAS regulations while facilitating necessary air travel arrangements under specific circumstances.
