In the year 2023, Lagos and Ogun States emerged as the leading states in Nigeria for mobile internet subscriptions, according to a report titled ‘Telecoms Data: Active Voice and Internet per State, Porting and Tariff Information (Q2 2023)’ released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The NBS disclosed that the total number of active internet subscribers increased to 159,498,826 in Q2 2023, reflecting a 5.40% growth from the 151,332,090 reported in Q2 2022. This information was published on the official website of the NBS on Thursday.
Lagos State secured the top position in both active voice and internet subscribers, with 26,423,757 and 18,868,376 respectively, in Q2 2023. Ogun State followed closely with 12,976,190 active voice subscribers and 9,471,170 active internet subscribers.

Kano ranked third overall, with 12,129,536 active voice subscribers and 8,768,199 active internet subscribers. Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Ekiti recorded the lowest numbers in both categories.
Furthermore, the report highlighted that in Q3 2023, the total number of active voice subscribers reached 221,769,883, showing a growth rate of 4.51% from the 212,201,578 reported in Q3 2022.
MTN emerged as the telecom provider with the highest number of subscribers in Q2 2023.
This data contrasts with the top states for mobile internet subscriptions in 2022, where Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Oyo, and the Federal Capital Territory took the lead, accounting for 33.52% of the total number of mobile subscriptions in the country.
The report emphasized the dynamic nature of the telecommunications landscape in Nigeria, reflecting changes and growth in internet usage across different states.
