The Director of Press and Public Relations for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Eddy Megwa, addressed the issue of an investigative reporter registering twice for the scheme by using alternate details.
The reporter, Umar Audu, had detailed how he obtained a degree from a Cotonou-based university within six weeks and successfully registered for the NYSC by changing his email and phone number.
Megwa explained that the NYSC’s integrated ICT system initially rejected the reporter’s registration because he had served in the scheme before.
However, the reporter succeeded by changing his email and phone number.

Megwa stated that the NYSC is working to prevent such incidents from happening again and mentioned ongoing efforts to improve the system’s checks and balances.
He highlighted that for foreign-trained graduates, the NYSC conducts biometric and physical verification, relying on certificates and details provided by the graduates for authentication.
Megwa also mentioned collaborations with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to integrate the use of the National Identity Number (NIN) in registration.
Additionally, the NYSC intends to collaborate with the Nigerian Immigration Service to prevent inappropriate stamping of passports.
The goal is to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the NYSC registration process.
