The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed deep condolences over the death of a 19-year-old Nigerian student, Afolabi Stephen, who was allegedly killed by policemen in Manitoba, Canada, on December 31, 2023.

The circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear, but reports indicate that the Winnipeg, Manitoba Police Department responded to a call about a young male acting “erratically.”

Efforts to calm him reportedly failed, leading to the discharge of a firearm by the police, resulting in his death.

In response to the tragic incident, Dabiri-Erewa promised that justice would be served.

The statement conveyed condolences to Afolabi Stephen’s family and friends, with prayers for his soul to rest in peace.

The Nigerian mission in Ottawa is reportedly in contact with the Canadian authorities, who have assured that investigations into the incident are underway and will be thorough.
