Residents living along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, joined by human rights activists from the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, staged a protest on Wednesday demanding urgent repairs to certain sections of the road.

The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the deteriorating condition of the road, citing government neglect and its adverse impact on the safety of commuters.

The demonstrators highlighted that the dilapidated state of the road has resulted in a series of accidents, causing injuries and loss of lives.

The protest caused a significant disruption as the Meiran end of the road was barricaded, leading to a gridlock in the area, leaving commuters and motorists stranded.

Alex Omotehinse, the President of the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights, addressed the growing casualties on the road in recent weeks.

He accused security operatives of exploiting motorists by taking advantage of the poor road conditions, allowing them to ply one-way.

Omotehinse urged the state government to take immediate action, suggesting that the road should be graded temporarily before the commencement of a comprehensive repair.

He emphasized the need for the government to consider the well-being of road users and proposed allowing them to use one-way temporarily, with the provision of traffic officers to ensure order and prevent abuse of the situation.
