Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, issued a stern warning to judges on Wednesday, urging them to uphold the integrity of the judiciary and avoid actions that could tarnish the court’s image.

Speaking at the opening of the 2023 Conference of Judges of the Federal High Court in Abuja, the CJN emphasized the need for judges to base their decisions strictly on laws and rules rather than attempting to influence others, regardless of their status.

He stressed the importance of judges going the extra mile to justify their appointments and cautioned against creating loopholes that could undermine the reputation of the court.

Addressing the judges directly, Justice Ariwoola reminded them that being a judge, especially in their court where they often sit alone, is a serious responsibility.

He urged them to produce judgments that the Court of Appeal would be compelled to affirm.

Furthermore, Justice Ariwoola warned judges of the Federal High Court not to take their appointments lightly.

He highlighted the significance of the Federal High Court, not only as the largest and best in the country but also as the sole court with exclusive jurisdiction over election-related matters.

He urged judges to work diligently to justify their appointments, emphasizing the need for judgments and decisions that would stand up to scrutiny in the Appellate Courts.

Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, reflected on the court’s evolution over the past 50 years.

Starting with a single courtroom and five judges in Lagos, the court has grown to encompass 37 divisions and currently boasts 95 judges.

Justice Tsoho acknowledged the recent appointment of 23 judges to enhance the court’s performance, emphasizing their induction and deployment to various divisions.
