In a significant development in Edo State, over 68 aspirants have declared their intention to run for the governorship seat in the 2024 elections.

This is the first time in the history of the state that such a large number of aspirants are vying for the position.

The aspirants are spread across the three major political parties: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Labour Party (LP).

The LP has 28 aspirants, the APC has 29, and the PDP has 11, with the possibility of more joining the race.

Among the notable aspirants are old guards like Kenneth Imasuagbon, who is making his fifth attempt for the governorship, and new entrants like the state APC chairman, Col. David Imuse (retd), and serving senators and members of the House of Representatives.

The APC’s decision not to zone the ticket to Edo Central has opened up the race, attracting more aspirants.

Some prominent names include Kassim Afegbua, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (retd), and Dennis Idahosa, among others.

The LP has Kenneth Imasuagbon, Philip Shaibu (the deputy governor), and Asuen Ighodalo, Chairman of Sterling Bank, in the race.

The PDP, with 11 aspirants, including Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, is gearing up for a competitive primary.

The state party chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, sees the high number of aspirants as a positive for democracy, indicating that people believe in the system and expect credible primaries.

The APC Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae, attributes the surge in aspirants to the party’s level playing ground and increasing attractiveness in Edo.

He assures that the APC has put mechanisms in place for a smooth primary election.

The LP Publicity Secretary, Sam Uroupa, views the high number as a positive sign, reflecting a desire for change from the status quo.

In summary, the governorship race in Edo State is gaining momentum with a diverse and substantial pool of aspirants from different political parties, setting the stage for an interesting and competitive electoral process.
