Senator Ali Ndume expressed concerns on Wednesday, stating that the sanctions imposed on Niger Republic are not an effective solution to restoring constitutional order in the country.
He argued that the sanctions, implemented by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), are adversely affecting ordinary citizens in Niger.
Ndume made these remarks during a debate on the situation report presented by Ali Djibo, a member of the Parliament from Niger Republic, at the ongoing Second Session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Nigeria.

The sanctions were imposed by ECOWAS in July 2023 following a military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
The sanctions include travel bans, border closures, and the freezing of assets belonging to the government and its supporters.
The senator emphasized that the current sanctions are not an effective means to resolve the political crisis in Niger and suggested exploring alternative solutions.
His call for the lifting of sanctions comes ahead of the ECOWAS heads of state summit, where regional leaders will likely discuss the situation in Niger.
