A fatal auto crash occurred on Saturday along the Calabar-Itu highway in Cross River State, resulting in five confirmed deaths and 11 others sustaining injuries.
The accident involved a Nissan Caravan with registration number GWB532XY and a Mark Truck with no registration number, and it happened around 3 p.m.
According to the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Akwa Ibom Command, Mr Matthew Olonisaye, the cause of the accident was attributed to speeding.

The victims, comprising 11 males and five females, were involved in the crash, with three of the females and two of the males confirmed dead. The remaining 11 occupants, both male and female, sustained injuries of various degrees.
FRSC operatives swiftly responded to the incident, moving the injured individuals to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the morgue.
Eyewitnesses reported that the crash was speed-related, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety regulations.
The sector commander warned motorists against speeding, wrong-way driving, and indiscriminate parking, urging road users to prioritize safety.
He also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a quick recovery to the injured. After the evacuation of victims, the wreckage was cleared to ensure the free flow of traffic.
