President Bola Tinubu, speaking at the COP28 Summit on Methane and Other Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases in Dubai, pledged Nigeria’s commitment to end gas-flaring as part of its contribution to the global effort to reduce methane emissions.
Tinubu highlighted the penalties for gas-flaring and the incentives for compliance, emphasizing that Nigeria had measures in place to encourage adherence and punish defaulters.
Tinubu commended the United Arab Emirates for its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and called for the implementation of net-zero commitments by all participants.

He stressed Nigeria’s commitment to an energy mix, providing cooking gas domestically, and leveraging new technology for renewable energy.
The President called on major economies, especially the US and China, as the largest culprits in greenhouse gas emissions, to act urgently in addressing climate change.
He urged them to support Africa in de-risking additional investment and technological know-how.
COP28 President Sultan Al-Jaber expressed optimism about achieving success in limiting rising temperatures, emphasizing that eliminating all CO2 gases is possible with cooperation and hard work.
US Envoy John Kerry announced over $1 billion in new grant funding mobilized since COP27 and highlighted global methane pledge endorsements, including new commitments from Angola, Kenya, and Romania.
Chinese Envoy Xie Zhenhua expressed China’s willingness to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but noted a lack of full capacity, calling for support from the international community.
