A factional clash within the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) took a violent turn as members from one faction stormed the National Hospital in Abuja on Friday.

The attack targeted two injured members of the opposing faction who were receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a previous clash between the groups.

Reports from Saturday PUNCH indicate that the chaotic incident forced numerous patients to hastily vacate their hospital wards and beds as the NANS factions engaged in a violent confrontation.

Prompt intervention by the police was crucial in quelling the disturbance and restoring order within the hospital premises.

Observations by our correspondent revealed an increased presence of police officers around the Central Area, where both the National Hospital and the International Conference Centre are located.

Impeccable security sources disclosed that the initial conflict between the NANS factions erupted on Thursday, persisting into Friday and resulting in further violent altercations that left some students injured and subsequently admitted to the National Hospital for medical care.

The opposing faction reportedly learned of the injured members’ location and sought to attack them at the hospital, prompting the need for heightened security measures.

Additionally, credible intelligence led the Department of State Services to intercept some NANS members on Thursday, recovering two pump-action guns and cartridges from them as they were en route to a convention.

In the aftermath of the attack on the National Hospital, major roads leading to the International Conference Centre and the hospital experienced reduced traffic, with police cordoning off sections of the highway.

Dr. Tayo Haastrup, the spokesperson for the National Hospital, confirmed the attack, emphasizing that the intruders aimed to target the injured members undergoing treatment.

Upon inquiry about the incident, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, requested time to gather information and respond, stating, “I’ll make my findings and get back to you, please.”
