The tragic death of All Bassey Sardauna, a dedicated teacher at Government Day Secondary School Model in Jalingo, Taraba State, has raised significant concerns about security in the region.

Sardauna’s untimely demise occurred on November 9 when he was fatally stabbed by a former student identified as James Williams.

During a visit to the school on November 22, it was observed that there were no security measures in place, allowing easy access to the premises.

Teachers were seen gathering in small groups, possibly discussing the incident, while students roamed freely within the porous school compound.

Speaking anonymously, a teacher expressed fear, stating, “We are working in fear in this school. The psychological effect of Bassey’s tragic death is with us.”

Concerns were also raised about the lack of perimeter fences, making schools vulnerable to potential attacks.

Two other teachers, Musa Tanko and Tarwa Terfa from different schools in the state, echoed these fears, emphasizing the need for increased security and perimeter fencing in schools.

They called on the government and community leaders to take urgent action to safeguard schools, highlighting the risk of attacks due to porous boundaries.

A student provided insight into the events leading to the tragedy, explaining an altercation between Sardauna and the former student during a routine assembly.

The incident escalated, resulting in the fatal stabbing.

The school principal, Mr. Roberts Moses, revealed efforts to enhance security, including discussions with the police and plans to deploy personnel for regular checks.

The late teacher’s wife, Mercy, shared that her husband had sensed danger and experienced a premonition of his death.

She recounted the signs of unease in the weeks leading up to the tragic incident.

The community mourns the loss of a respected teacher, with the school principal describing Sardauna as one of the best educators at the Model School.

As the investigation continues, there are calls for immediate action to address security gaps and ensure the safety of students and staff in Taraba State schools.
