UEFA has taken action in response to the controversial penalty decision during the Champions League clash between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Newcastle United, removing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) official from duty.

Tomasz Kwiatkowski of Poland, who was the VAR in question during the PSG vs. Newcastle match, has been replaced and will not oversee the Champions League Group D game between Real Sociedad and Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday.

The contentious moment occurred when Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty in the eighth minute of injury time, securing a 1-1 draw for PSG against Newcastle.

The penalty decision was influenced by VAR Kwiatkowski, who prompted the on-field referee, Szymon Marciniak, to review images of a handball by Tino Livramento in the box.

Despite controversy surrounding the decision, the penalty was awarded, denying Newcastle a potential victory and leaving them on the brink of elimination from the group stage.

Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle, criticized the penalty decision as “a poor decision” in his post-match comments.

UEFA’s decision to replace Kwiatkowski reflects the significance placed on maintaining the integrity and fairness of officiating in top-level competitions.
