Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service have made a significant recovery of ammunition in Ogun State, near the country’s border with Benin Republic.

A total of 975 rounds of Red Star live cartridges were discovered concealed in bags of smuggled rice abandoned on a bush path along the Palace-Ayetoro Road in Imeko Afon.

The Comptroller of Ogun State One Customs Command, Ahmad Shuaib, announced this major seizure to newsmen at the Idiroko Headquarters of the command on Wednesday.

According to Shuaib, 975 of the cartridges were concealed in each of the five bags of smuggled rice recovered by customs patrol during an intelligence-based operation conducted last Monday night.

The bags of rice containing live cartridges were found abandoned by smugglers, and Customs operatives successfully evacuated them without any intervention from those who had concealed the ammunition in the bush path.

This discovery underscores the ongoing efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service to curb illegal activities, especially smuggling, along the nation’s borders.

The authorities are likely to conduct further investigations to determine the origin and intended destination of the smuggled ammunition.
