The Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, has contested the recent claim made by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, asserting that the Binis founded certain areas of Lagos.

The Oba of Benin, during a visit to Lagos State, stated that historical records indicate that his ancestors played a significant role in the foundation of parts of Lagos.

In response to the Oba of Benin’s statement, Balogun Abisoye Oshodi released a video addressing the historical assertion.

While acknowledging the Oba of Benin’s visit and extending respect, Oshodi challenged the claim that the Binis founded Lagos.

Pointing to historical records, Oshodi clarified that Lagos, especially the island known as Eko, existed before the arrival of the Bini ancestors.

He acknowledged that the Bini ancestors settled on a small island called Eko, but the island predated their arrival.

Oshodi emphasized that the island had been established, and other tribes, including the Awori, Isheri, and Olofin, were already present before the creation of Lagos State.

“With all due respect to the Oba of Benin, Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, Sir may you live long… Point of correction Sir, Lagos was never founded by the Binis,” stated Balogun Oshodi in the video.

The Oba of Benin’s assertion has sparked a debate on social media, with individuals expressing varying opinions on the historical connections and founding of Lagos.

As historical narratives are revisited and debated, the exchange underscores the rich and complex history of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
