A somber atmosphere enveloped Oyede Avenue Plaza in the Sango-Ota area of Ogun State on Sunday as residents made a gruesome discovery of the decomposing body of a newborn baby in their neighborhood.

The tragic incident unfolded when a resident noticed a foul smell and traced it to a sack behind a nearby compound.

According to information from a police source, the mother of the newborn, identified as 21-year-old Esther Ojuko, allegedly killed the baby girl shortly after delivery.

It is reported that Ojuko wrapped the baby in a sack before callously discarding her in a nearby compound.

The exact age of the deceased baby at the time of the incident remains unconfirmed.

The Ogun State police command indicated that Ojuko might have been mentally unbalanced when the crime occurred.

The discovery of the decomposing body prompted residents, including one identified as Ogunmuyiwa, to report the incident to the Sango-Ota Police Division.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that the mother is currently in custody for suspected murder.

The deceased baby has been transported to the Ifo General Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
