The Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, and the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Wale Musa, oversaw the destruction of 1,500 seized motorcycles on Monday at the Lagos State Task Force premises in Oshodi.

The exercise comes as part of the state government’s continued efforts to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, operating on major highways.

The Lagos State Government shared images of the motorcycle crushing exercise on its official social media account, providing visual evidence of the ongoing clampdown.

The caption accompanying the post on the government’s X account stated, “Commissioner for #lagosMOT1, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, with the Permanent Secretary, Wale Musa, at the crushing of 1,500 seized commercial motorcycles at the Lagos State Task Force premises on Monday.”

The ban on commercial motorcycles on major highways has been in effect, with periodic enforcement exercises aimed at curbing the resurgence of okada operators on restricted routes.

The recent crackdown is a response to the reported return of okada operators to the roads despite the existing ban.

Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the Director of Public Affairs for the Lagos State Task Force, highlighted the challenges of enforcement in border areas, particularly mentioning Ojodu as a location where okada riders use the neighboring state as a camouflage to evade arrest.

He noted the difficulty in implementing the ban due to the proximity of Lagos to Ogun State.

As the state government continues to address the issue of okada operations and enforce traffic regulations, such initiatives aim to promote road safety, reduce congestion, and maintain order on Lagos roads.
