Residents of Oke-Afa in Magboro, situated in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, have voiced their distress over the absence of a public primary school in their community.

The residents, expressing their concerns highlighted that children in the area have to endure long treks to the neighboring community, Magboro-Akeran, for education.

The community comprises seven densely populated settlements, including Ilupeju, Sanni-Omotedo, Olowofela, Kajola, Sparklight, Redstar, and Wemabods.

Although a school building was erected some years ago, it has not commenced operations due to a lack of manpower.

Alihu Lawal, the youth representative of the Oke-Afa Community Development Committee, stated that numerous petitions have been sent to the government, but all efforts to attract attention have proven futile.

He emphasized the need for the government to mobilize teachers and establish a functioning public primary school in the community, alleviating the challenges faced by students.

Lawal expressed concern over the financial burden on parents who cannot afford private school fees.

He urged the government to provide free education for the less privileged in the community.

Bose, a resident, echoed the sentiment, calling on the government to intervene and build a standard school to ensure that children in the community can enjoy accessible and free education.

Students, like Ayomide, shared their struggles, highlighting the long distances they have to trek to school and the financial strain on their families.

The residents collectively appealed for urgent government intervention to address the educational challenges in their community.

In response, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science, and Technology, explained the criteria for government takeover of community schools.

He outlined conditions such as the need for appropriate infrastructure, qualified teachers, and adherence to minimum standards.

Arigbabu assured that if the community school met the stipulated conditions, the government would consider taking over its administration.

The residents hope that their plea will prompt swift action from the government to establish a primary school, ensuring that the children in Oke-Afa have access to quality education within their community.
