The Kano State Government has uncovered a total of 3,234 individuals receiving illegal salaries within the state public service.

Startlingly, among these ineligible workers are a 13-year-old girl, students from primary and secondary schools, as well as members of the National Youth Service Corps.

The revelation was made by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, during a press briefing on the findings of a committee established by the government to investigate the unauthorized recruitments.

Governor Abba Yusuf had previously ordered the immediate suspension of salaries for over 10,000 public servants who were employed towards the end of the tenure of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

The committee’s investigation highlighted that despite the rushed employment process, the previous administration failed to consider the financial implications within the 2023 appropriation.

Dr. Bichi expressed disappointment at the discovery, emphasizing that many of the recruits did not undergo the standard screening process, and some secured positions with fraudulent certificates.

As part of the government’s response, 9,332 individuals with valid qualifications will be offered employment opportunities.

The secretary also outlined that appropriate sanctions would be applied, particularly to civil servants who were complicit in the irregularities, in accordance with civil service rules.

Notably, the mother of the 13-year-old girl, who admitted to receiving salaries through her mother’s account while being a public service employee, will face sanctions as well.
