Funso Doherty, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has raised serious concerns over the allocation of N12.4 billion for consultancy fees in the Lagos Mega City project and the construction of bus corridors in selected locations across the state.

In an open letter of public procurement addressed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and dated November 17, 2023, Doherty revealed what he considers questionable financial practices.

According to Doherty, the Lagos State Government (LASG) paid N5.3 billion to Advanced Engineering Consultants and Rom Transportation Engineering for “Consultancy service for the update of the strategic transport and mobility master plan for Lagos Mega City Area.”

He highlighted the conflict of interest, as the same company, AEC, was also involved in implementing multiple aspects of the Strategic Transport Mobility Master Plan (STMP), including contracts for bus corridors and the design of the Fourth Mainland Bridge.

Doherty further alleged that N7.3 billion was paid to Advanced Engineering Consultants for consultancy services related to the detailed engineering design and supervision of the construction of quality bus corridor packages in various locations across the state.

In the letter, he brought attention to other expenditures, including N18,468,000 awarded for the “supply and distribution of 2,000 Noiler chicken across the local government areas and wards in the state” and N440,750,000 for the “procurement of a brand new Lexus LX 600 Bullet Proof Sport Utility Vehicle for use in the Pool of Office of Chief” from the office of the chief of staff.

Other expenses cited in the letter include N7,475,000 for the “replacement of the liquid fragrance in the Office of Mr Governor, Lagos House, Ikeja,” N30,000,000 for the “monthly outreach of indigent citizens by the wife of the deputy governor,” and N2,017,840,000 for the “provision of supply items (rechargeable fans, rechargeable lights and fridge) in the office of the deputy governor.”

Additionally, the government awarded N531,553,559 for the “renovation of Saint Andrews Anglican Church. Oke-Popo, Lagos,” according to Doherty’s letter.

The allegations raise concerns about transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, demanding thorough investigation and clarification from the Lagos State Government.
